By Randy Thanthong-Knight | BloombergAlphabet Inc. said it will remove links to Canadian news from its Google search engine after the country passed a law requiring digital platforms to pay local publishers for news content. The Online News Act “creates uncertainty for our products and exposes us to uncapped financial liability simply for facilitating Canadians’ access to news from Canadian publishers,” Kent Walker, the California-based company’s president of global affairs, said in a statement.Walker said the links will be removed when the law takes effect later this year.Related ArticlesTechnology | Former Google executive enters 2024 US Senate race to succeed California’s Feinstein Technology | Google eliminates jobs at Waze after merging ad services Technology | Housing highrise may sprout next to Google village in San Jose Technology | Should laptops expire? (KRON) -- The University of California President issued a statement Thursday in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding the use of race in college admissions.UC President Michael V. Drake said, "We are disappointed in the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to bar the use of race in college admissions, a valuable practice that has helped higher education institutions increase diversity and address historical wrongs over the past several decades."The Supreme Court's ruling will not directly impact public universities in California. The consideration of race in admissions has been banned in California for 27 years by Proposition 209. After voters passed the proposition in 1996, the University of California and California State University adjusted their admissions practices to comply with the law.Nearly 100 private colleges and universities in California, including Stanford University and Santa Clara University, have been free to consider race for making admissions decisions. A suspicious package was found on the steps of the Supreme Court Thursday, causing several road closures around the building. U.S. Capitol Police announced in a tweet that it is assisting the Supreme Court Police with the package and helping to keep the area clear “out of an abundance of caution.” It said in an alert that it is conducting an investigation into the package on the Unit Block of First Street Southeast Washington, D.C., on the court’s steps, and staff and other personnel should avoid the area until further notice. Capitol Police said road closures are in effect on Maryland Avenue between Constitution Avenue and First Street Northeast, on First Street between Constitution Avenue Northeast and Independence Avenue Southeast and on East Capitol Street between First and Second streets. The police said in the tweet that it cannot provide further information about another agency’s case but would provide updates about its own involvement. A top adviser to Anthony Fauci at the National Institutes of Health admitted that he used a personal email account in an apparent effort to evade the strictures of the Freedom of Information Act, according to records obtained by congressional investigators probing the origin of Covid-19. The official also expressed his intention to delete emails in order to avoid media scrutiny.“As you know, I try to always communicate on gmail because my NIH email is FOIA’d constantly,” wrote David M. Morens, a high-ranking NIH official, in a September 2021 email, one of a series of email exchanges that included many leading scientists involved in the bitter Covid origins debate. “Stuff sent to my gmail gets to my phone,” he added, “but not my NIH computer.”After noting that his Gmail account had been hacked, however, he wrote to the group to say that he might have to use his NIH email account to communicate with them instead. “Don’t worry,” he wrote, “just send to any of my addresses, and I will d...Ex-GOP Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in $60M bribery scheme

Max Verstappen can accelerate further into Formula One history with a victory at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.Victory on his Red Bull team’s home track in Spielberg would take Verstappen to 42 wins, one more than the late Ayrton Senna and alone in fifth place all-time for most GP wins.Dominant Red Bull has won all eight races this season, with Verstappen winning the last four and six overall. The 25-year-old Dutchman finished second behind teammate Sergio Perez in the other two races.Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso, who has six podiums finishes so far, joked about how to win a race.“Two Red Bulls out of the way would be a good way to achieve that,” Alonso said Thursday. Alonso, who won the last of his 32 races 10 years ago, dismissed any notion that he had closed the gap at the Canadian GP two weeks ago because Verstappen won by a comparatively close 9.6 seconds. “In Barcelona, just two weeks before Canada, we were one minute behind (Verstappen),” the 41-year-old Alon...Ex-chemical safety agency chief misused $90K on trips, renovations and other expenses, watchdog says

WASHINGTON (AP) — The former head of a federal agency that investigates chemical accidents improperly spent more than $90,000 during her tenure, including unauthorized trips to and from her California home, remodeling her Washington office and outside media training for herself, according to a new report by a federal watchdog. The report by the Environmental Protection Agency’s inspector general says Katherine Lemos, the former chair of the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, was not entitled to travel expenses worth nearly $50,000 for at least 18 round trips between the capital and her home in San Diego from April 2020 through March 2022, when she changed her official workplace to San Diego.Lemos took two additional round trips between San Diego and Washington from March 2022 until her resignation four months later, the report said. Those trips cost more than $5,000, but investigators were unable to determine if they violated federal policy.Lemos, who was appointed by former President Donal...Latest news
