To go, or not to go: Gunnar Henderson’s decision to forgo cycle sparks debate among Orioles players, fans

Gunnar Henderson’s sprinkler celebration in the eighth inning Sunday was delayed.Instead of his teammates waiting in the dugout eager to spit water for the second half of the doubles celebration, they looked at the 22-year-old rookie with exasperated expressions.Henderson had just passed up the opportunity to hit for the cycle — an achievement only seven players in Orioles history have accomplished — by sprinting past first on his rocket down the right field line and cruising into second for a double. The decision by Henderson sparked a debate between Orioles players — and fans online — about whether he should have stayed at first to secure the rare feat.“If it was me, I would’ve fallen at first base and just stayed there, you know?” shortstop Jorge Mateo said with a smile through team interpreter Brandon Quinones. “But he has every right to make his own decision, and he chose to go to second.”Henderson said he contemplated ...A quick look at rainfall totals from Hilary

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Outsider Bernardo Arévalo appeared to be the “virtual winner” of Sunday’s election to be Guatemala’s next president after voters became angry at widespread corruption and leaders’ failure to tackle it.A potential victory by the progressive candidate is almost certainly distressing politicians who have been enjoying impunity for corruption, along with some members of the monied elite and their allies in organized crime. With more than 97% of the votes counted, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal reported that the son of former president Juan José Arévalo, representing the Seed Movement, led former first lady Sandra Torres by 59% to 36%.Supreme Electoral Tribunal Magistrate Blanca Alfaro called Arévalo the “virtual winner” and called for an immediate national dialogue to begin to reconcile the country’s deep political divides.President Alejandro Giammattei congratulated Arévalo in a tweet on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador (AP) — Early results in Sunday’s special presidential election in Ecuador pointed to a leftist backed by the country’s fugitive ex-president likely facing a runoff with the son of a banana tycoon.Ecuadorians voted amid unprecedented violence that even claimed the life of a presidential candidate at the end of a campaign rally less than two weeks before the election.Leftist Luisa González appeared set to advance to an Oct. 15 runoff, according to early results released by electoral authorities. She would likely face Daniel Noboa, a former lawmaker and the son of Alvaro Noboa, who built his wealth on a huge banana-growing and exporting business.González has said she would have former President Rafael Correa as her adviser if she wins. Correa remains a major force in Ecuador despite being found guilty of corruption in 2020 and sentenced in absentia to eight years in prison. He has been living in his wife’s native Belgium since 2017.One of Correa’s loudest critics was...Large police presence in Bolingbrook as police investigate shooting

If you thought Saturday’s heat was oppressive, prepare for more, and possibly warmer, temperatures this week.Saturday’s high was 91 but the heat index — what it felt like — reached 98, said Mike Greisinger, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Twin Cities. That was 10 degrees above the norm, he said. The heat didn’t go far, just a bit south, he said, and now it’s starting to head back toward the metro.By Tuesday, the mercury will climb as high as the upper 90s and possibly higher on Wednesday. “We’re keeping a closer eye on Wednesday,” he said. “At the very least it will be in the upper 90s, but 100 isn’t out of the question.”On Sunday, the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat watch from Tuesday morning through Thursday evening for large portions of Minnesota and western Wisconsin, including Ramsey, Anoka, Dakota and Washington counties. The heat index could reach 107, and the risk of heat-related illnesses is projected to be significantly higher.Looking back...‘A tough night for the Lynx’: Uninspired Minnesota falls 88-74 to Storm

The WNBA’s leading scorer bounced back nicely Sunday. That was bad news for the unenergetic, uninspired Minnesota Lynx.Jewell Loyd scored 31 points and Seattle beat Minnesota 88-74 in a relatively quiet Target Center.A visibly frustrated Cheryl Reeve questioned the team’s effort two days after Minnesota won 78-70 in the Pacific Northwest.“They came in with great will and determination and beat us in every phase of the game. … It’s unfathomable to me,” the coach said. The 15-17 Lynx are just 6-10 at home.“We consistently come out and let an opponent just will their way in every phase of the game. You know, there’s countless games that we’ve said this about. So, we don’t get it. We don’t get how to have a special season,” Reeve said. “We don’t get that you have to win your home games to have a special season. We don’t get that when you just beat a team on their floor how they’re going to come out and play. We don’t get it. ST. LOUIS – Residents in a north St. Louis neighborhood contacted FOX 2 seeking help in dealing with dumping in the wake of recent storms. They claimed the St. Louis Forestry Division had been slow to remove downed trees and other storm damage.Amber Cole was fed up last week when she called for help. But now, she says things got moving after FOX 2 contacted the city forestry commissioner.“Well, since you came out, they started working,” she said. “Even the day that you were coming out, you must have called them and asked what are you all doing! “ Hedge apples: Can we eat them? Cole says a small army of forestry workers showed up and fanned out across the neighborhood, picking up debris that had been dumped in the alley and elsewhere. They even cut down and hauled away vegetation that had been growing on abandoned houses for years.“It’s a start,” Cole said. “And I will call you if within two weeks if this stuff is not up.
