NEEDHAM – Even in high school football, the game is completely one-sided towards the offensive side of the ball – unless you play Needham.Needham didn’t make it easy on itself but outlasted Lincoln-Sudbury, 14-13, in a non-league slobber knocker of a game. In an old-school, smash mouth style battle, the Rockets (2-0) posted their second impressive home victory over a quality opponent.Everything came down to the final seconds as Needham dominated on defense most of the game, but two touchdowns in the final six minutes gave the Warriors (1-1) the opportunity to tie or go for two with 17 seconds left in regulation.“We executed the way we wanted to. We wanted it to come down to the last possession right there and that was kind of the way the game had been going back and forth,” said Lincoln-Sudbury head coach Jim Girard. “It was kind of a tale of two halves as they sort of dominated the first half, but I thought our defense played great in the second half.”Girard went for the win with t...

It felt in the moment like a crippling blow.Having loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second, Red Sox lefty Brennan Bernardino got a big strikeout and appeared to draw an inning-ending groundout to escape the jam. Upon further review the umpires ruled that DJ LeMahieu beat Pablo Reyes’ throw at first, overturning the call to give LeMahieu an RBI single and bring Aaron Judge to the plate. You can probably imagine what happened next.Judge cranked a grand slam to straightaway center field to put the Yankees ahead, and though the Red Sox fought back to tie the game they couldn’t hold the Yankees off late in Thursday night’s 8-5 loss.LeMahieu delivered the game-winning RBI double in the top of the eighth and Oswald Peraza added a two-run home run in the ninth for the exclamation mark. By splitting the doubleheader, New York clinched the series and moved back into a tie with Boston for last in the AL East. The Red Sox took an early 2-0 lead, with Ceddanne Rafa...

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. Lauch Faircloth of North Carolina, a onetime conservative Democrat who switched late in his career to the Republicans and then got elected to Congress, died Thursday. He was 95. Faircloth, who served one Senate term before losing to then-unknown Democrat John Edwards in 1998, died at his home in Clinton, said Brad Crone, a former campaign aide and close friend. Years after an unsuccessful Democratic bid for governor in 1984, Faircloth switched to the GOP and ran in 1992 against U.S. Sen. Terry Sanford, a longtime friend and former political ally. Faircloth pulled off the upset, attacking Sanford as a big-spending liberal and benefiting politically from Sanford’s health problems in the campaign’s final weeks. While in the Senate, the millionaire businessman and Sampson County farmer was known as one of the most partisan senators, blasting Bill and Hillary Clinton and calling for the dismantling of Cabinet departments and other federal agencies.
