KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine sent waves of drones deep into western Russia in nighttime attacks that lasted more than four hours and struck military assets, Russian officials and media reports said Wednesday. The drones hit an airport near Russia’s border with Estonia and Latvia, causing a huge blaze and damaging four Il-76 military transport planes, which can carry heavy machinery and troops, the Russian state news agency Tass reported, citing emergency officials. With at least six regions of Russia targeted, the barrage appeared to be the most extensive Ukrainian drone attack on Russian soil since the war began 18 months ago, although no injuries were reported. The Kremlin has repeatedly accused the Ukrainian military of cross-border incursions on the Belgorod region of Russia and of launching drones toward Moscow. There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian officials, who usually don’t take responsibility for attacks inside Russia. The Kremlin’s forces, meanwhile, hit Kyiv ...Poland’s ruling party names candidates for divisive commission which critics say targets opposition

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s ruling party Wednesday was the only party to name candidates for the controversial commission for examining Russian influence in the country which is believed to be targeting the opposition and its popular leader Donald Tusk ahead of the Oct. 15 parliamentary elections. The commission was established by a law proposed by the governing nationalist Law and Justice party to check whether between 2007 and 2022 politicians have made decisions under Russia’s influence that could threaten Poland’s security. In the coming elections, Law and Justice which has governed since 2015, will seek an unprecedented third term of power while facing-off with Tusk and his Civic Coalition of centrist opposition parties. Critics say the commission would have unconstitutional powers, including the capacity to exclude officials from public life for a decade. The EU launched legal action against member country Poland in June over the contentious law establishing the commission ...Man charged in death of 8-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself on West Side: police

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The U.S. government is trying to stop a planned expedition to recover items of historical interest from the sunken Titanic, citing a federal law and an international agreement that treat the shipwreck as a hallowed gravesite. The expedition is being organized by RMS Titanic Inc., the Georgia-based firm that owns the salvage rights to the world’s most famous shipwreck. The company exhibits artifacts that have been recovered from the wreck site at the bottom of the North Atlantic, from silverware to a piece of the Titanic's hull. The government's challenge comes more than two months after the Titan submersible imploded near the sunken ocean liner, killing five people. But this legal fight has nothing to do with the June tragedy, which involved a different company and an unconventionally designed vessel. The battle in the U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Virginia, which oversees Titanic salvage matters, hinges instead on federal law and a pact with Great Britain to trea...Dean's Home Video: Latest 'Indiana Jones' film is streaming now

AUSTIN (KXAN) - With expectations as high as they've been in years, Texas football enters the season with hopes of leaving the Big 12 as conference champions. A lot of that hope is reliant on a leap from Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers. After battling Hudson Card for the starting job last year, Ewers battled injuries and inconsistency as a passer. Now as the unquestioned starter, things have a much different feel."I think it's allowed me to coach him differently," said Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian about the lack of a quarterback battle. "He's feeling like when I'm coaching him, it's coaching him to be the best that he can be and not feel like sometimes that I'm pointing things out that he's doing wrong."For Ewers, his teammates and coaches have continued to note his command and confidence from last year to this one. He senses the same thing."[I] feel like I'm a lot more comfortable in the system which ultimately leads to confidence," said Ewers. "I feel a lot more confident in ...Source: Vikings to sign running back Myles Gaskin

It didn’t take long for the Vikings to make some tweaks to their initial 53-man roster.A source confirmed to the Pioneer Press on Wednesday morning that the Vikings plan to sign veteran running back Myles Gaskin after he was released by the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday afternoon. ESPN insider Adam Schefter was first to report the deal. The move will provide the Vikings with with some much needed depth in the backfield. Though it will still be Alexander Mattison serving as starter — the coaching staff is very high on him this season — Gaskin figures to compete with Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu for playing time as the primary backup. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Gaskin has played in 38 games in his career. He has 361 carries for 1,355 and 7 touchdowns in that span, as well as 101 receptions for 701 yards and 6 touchdowns. It’s worth noting the Vikings will have to make a corresponding move at some point before Gaskin can officially join the team.Related ArticlesMinnesota...Opening day of the 2023 Fonda Fair
