Adults in education and training across EU regions

The distribution of adult participation rates in formal and non-formal learning during the last 4 weeks at the regional level (NUTS 2 regions) tends to be very homogeneous within EU countries, reflecting national rather than regional education and training initiatives. In 2022, 96 out of 240 regions had participation rates equal to or above the EU average of 11.9%. This group included every region of Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovenia, Finland and Sweden, as well as Estonia, Luxembourg and Malta (all single regions at this level of detail). At the top of the list, there were 24 regions where at least one-quarter of people aged 25 - 64 participated in education and training during the four weeks prior to the survey. In 8 regions of Sweden, the participation rates were higher than in any other region in the EU, peaking at 38.1% in the capital region of Stockholm. This group also included all 5 regions of Denmark and 9 out of the 12 regions in the Netherlands, with the h...Forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia - PACE adopts resolution

At the end of April 2023, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution on the deportation and forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia. The first time that an international document refers to possible genocide by Russia against Ukrainians with reference to the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, writes Alona Lebedieva. The illegal deportation of minor citizens of Ukraine to Russia is the type of crime for which the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for president Putin and the Russian Commissioner for Child's Rights, Maria Lvova-Belova.Twenty percent of the entire child population of Ukraine now has its consciousness formed under the influence of Russia. The adopted resolution states that a large part of Ukrainian children was taken to Russia to summer camps, where their “re-education”, in particular, “Russification”, was conducted. In these camps, children were forbidden to speak U...Breathtaking bay views

By Jake Coyle | Associated PressIn “Nyad,” there are two feats of perseverance on display. First, there is the ceaseless determination of Diane Nyad (Annette Bening) to accomplish a marathon swim from Cuba to Florida across 103 miles of open, shark-infested waters. Then there is the mettle of Nyad’s support team to tolerate the singularly self-absorbed and stubborn Nyad. Both, in the film, are an endurance sport.“Nyad,” which opens in limited theaters Friday and streams Nov. 3 on Netflix, is in many ways a conventional sports drama, defined by long odds and personal triumph. But there is enough here to help the film, directed by the intrepid filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, if not swim against the tide of sports-biopic convention then at least ride a swift current to the finish line.First and foremost there’s the fact that this is a sports drama led by two actresses in their 60s: Bening and Jodie Foster, who plays Diana’s...US commitment to Ukraine a central question as Biden meets with EU heads during congressional chaos

WASHINGTON (AP) — Saddled with a dysfunctional Congress, President Joe Biden has the task of assuring European Union leaders on Friday that the United States can nonetheless deliver on promises to send tens of billions of dollars’ worth of aid to wartime Ukraine and Israel. The Oval Office sit-down comes at a moment when domestic U.S. political chaos could further destabilize an increasingly chaotic world. Many of Biden’s shared priorities with the EU depend on getting a budget through Congress — a tough task given that the House lacks an elected speaker and differences with some Republican lawmakers over aid for Ukraine could force a federal government shutdown in November.Along with addressing Ukraine’s efforts to repel Russia and the fallout from Hamas’ attack on Israel, the U.S. and EU leaders are also figuring out how to manage climate change, economic competition with China and trade and tax issues. One day ahead of his meeting with Biden, European Counc...ANÁLISIS | La conclusión número uno del discurso de Biden

MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich has decided not to sanction Noussair Mazraoui after the Morocco right back expressed support for Palestinians on social media. The German club said Friday that it had a “detailed and clarifying conversation with Noussair Mazraoui this week” after the 25-year-old player reportedly shared several posts on Instagram in support of Palestinians and against terrorism, hate and violence.“Mazraoui has credibly assured us that as a peace-loving person he resolutely rejects terror and war and he never meant to cause any irritation with his posts,” Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen said. “FC Bayern condemns Hamas’ attack on Israel.”Bayern quoted Mazraoui as saying, “I condemn all terrorism and terrorist organizations.”The club said it “stands by Germany’s Jewish community and by Israel’s side; nothing justifies the murder of children and families.”Bayern’s decision not to suspend Mazraoui stands in contrast to league rival Mainz, which suspended Dutch forw...IOC hits back at Putin claim of “ethnic discrimination” against Russia’s potential Olympic athletes

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The International Olympic Committee dismissed on Friday claims by Russian President Vladimir Putin of “ethnic discrimination” against athletes who are excluded from international sport. The IOC has advised sports bodies this year to vet Russian athletes for returning to compete as neutral individuals without a national identity ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics while continuing to exclude teams.Neutral status can be approved for athletes who have not actively supported the war and are not contracted to military or state security agencies, though there have been inconsistencies in how dozens of different sports have applied rules.“We firmly reject the accusations being made that these measures are an ‘ethnic discrimination,’” the IOC said in a statement one day after Putin’s speech.“They are a reaction to the breach of the Olympic Charter by the Russian and Belarusian governments,” the Olympic body said, referring to the military invasion of Ukraine s...Regions Financial: Q3 Earnings Snapshot
