Kurtenbach: The Warriors’ big offseason signing needs to be Bob Myers

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 08:03:03 GMT

Bob Myers built this Warriors dynasty. He should see it out.As Golden State heads into a pivotal offseason, fraught with questions about the team’s long-term future, there is one short-term decision that should be prioritized over all others:Myers, the team’s president of basketball operations whose contract is set to expire in July, needs to be re-signed.The Warriors’ coaches and players were adamant that this season was not a “last dance” scenario – that while the 2022-23 team “maxed” out the season after winning a title, there is still plenty this core group can achieve together. But there are a great number of moving parts to the Warriors’ roster this offseason and a new collective bargaining agreement – which might as well have named some of the new rules limiting spending after the Warriors — kicks in this summer. This might sound ridiculous, given that this team won a title less than a year ago, but turning these Warriors into true title contenders once again is a tall task. Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 08:03:03 GMT

With Memorial Day just two weeks away, Yosemite National Park is dealing with numerous delays in opening for the summer season. The most immediate setback is the short-notice closing of three Yosemite Valley campgrounds (No. 1 on the map below). Lower Pines, North Pines and Housekeeping will be shut down from Monday, May 15, until further notice because of the possibility of flooding on the Merced River. The park has also given these status reports, with locations noted on the map: 2/ Half Dome cables. The installation of the posts and cables that allow hikers to reach Half Dome’s summit has been delayed because of heavy snow, the park reported. The scheduled opening date for that section of trail had been May 26; no revised date has been announced. In 2017 — a year with heavy snow, but lighter than this year’s — the cables were up on June 2.Hikers who have permits for days when the Half Dome trail remains closed will not have to pay the $10-a-person fee, ...

We first became enamored with Sheldon Simeon on “Top Chef: Seattle” in season 10, when the Hilo-born celebrity chef emerged not only as a finalist but with the coveted “fan favorite” title to boot. Since then, he’s collected accolades — including Food & Wine magazine’s top new chefs for 2014 and a second “Top Chef” finalist/fan favorite nod — as well as restaurant credits. Now Simeon has gathered all his beloved family recipes – including how-tos for such favorites as the Mochiko Fried Chicken he serves at Maui’s casual Tin Roof – into one volume, “Cook Real Hawaii” (Clarkson Potter, $35). The book came out in 2021, offering tropical flavors and a dash of escapism in the form of poke, garlic shrimp and malasadas in the midst of the pandemic.Co-written with Garrett Snyder and photographed by Kevin J. Miyazaki, the book showcases the food he feeds his ‘ohana — his family and friends — which combines Hawaiian, Filipino, Kor...

Hawaii’s Pacific pathways and winding trails offer plenty of free adventure

It was a warm, sunny afternoon on Kauai’s Coconut Coast when my daughter and I set out on a leisurely bike ride on the Ke Ala Hele Makalae path from Kapa’a town to secluded Paliku Beach (aka Donkey Beach), eight miles to the north. Our hotel, the splendid, centrally-located Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort in Kapa’a, provided our bikes free of charge and even packed a backpack — a cooler bag — with a picnic and cold drinks to bring along on our shoreline ride. Mounting our clunky three-speed beach cruisers, we started our ride by winding through the backstreets of Kapa’a, cruising past small shops, pocket parks, food trucks and a kaleidoscope of small town scenery.Soon we were on the outskirts of town, away from the busy main road on a wide ocean side path, enjoying the sheer beauty of the shimmering water, Pacific views and surf crashing against a rugged volcanic shoreline. Here and there, silky smooth patches of sand appeared, and wider beaches, like swimmable Kealia...

ROME (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz didn’t see this one coming. How could he have?About to reclaim the No. 1 ranking, Alcaraz was pretty much pushed off the court at the Italian Open by 135th-ranked Hungarian qualifier Fabian Marozsan 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the third round on Monday.Alcaraz suffered his earliest defeat since October. He’d won 30 of 32 matches this year and was on a 12-match winning streak on clay after consecutive titles in Barcelona and Madrid. He secured a return to the top spot next week by winning his opening match in Rome. But he was caught off guard by how Marozsan dictated with spectacular play all over the court, including drop shots that Alcaraz had no answer for.“I just didn’t feel comfortable. He made me feel uncomfortable on court,” Alcaraz said. “He was aggressive all the time. He was playing inside the baseline all the time. It was tough for me to get into the match, into the rally. I made a lot of mistakes that I usually don’t make too much.”The result means Alc...
