State titles taste even sweeter for first-generation athletes Eboselulu, Odone Omofoma of Dayspring Christian, Daniel Baroumbaye of Grand Junction Central LAKEWOOD — When asked how Dayspring Christian Academy junior Eboselulu Omofoma felt about seeing her older sister Odone at last get atop the Class 2A podium twice Saturday, she recalled a saying she overheard her father, Sylvester, once say.“It’s like if a tree struggles to get water, the fruits are so much sweeter when it does get fruit — it’s kinda like that,” Eboselulu said after winning her fourth title of the weekend, and eighth in an already-illustrious prep career.“If you get it every year, it’s not as sweet and it’s not as amazing. But when you struggle for it and it’s do-or-die, it’s so much sweeter. It’s so much sweeter for her to do it than I.”Related ArticlesPreps | Grandview’s John Reyes, who built Wolves into Class 5A perennial power, retiring from coaching after 21 years in Colorado Preps | Mead’s Tavon Underwood smashes Colorado record in 4A boys 400-meter dash: “We all saw this coming” ...

Despite loss, SF Giants ace and rookie catcher were ‘in perfect sync’ SAN FRANCISCO – Logan Webb and Patrick Bailey might have given a glimpse of what’s to come for the Giants as the right-handed ace and the rookie catcher remained in complete harmony through six impressive innings Saturday against the Miami Marlins.Webb had seven strikeouts and allowed just four hits in another solid outing as he threw to Bailey, who made his first MLB start and picked up his first hit for the Giants in the eighth inning. But those were the biggest highlights for San Francisco, which was held to three hits in a 1-0 loss to the Marlins before an announced crowd of 31,993 on a mostly overcast day at Oracle Park.Marlins starter Braxton Garrett struck out eight over 6 1/3 innings as the Giants had their four-game winning streak halted in their fifth shutout loss of the season.“With respect to the way we swung the bat, I think we can do a better job than we did collectively as a team today,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “Sometimes a guy comes ou...

Scheffler’s slide ends with fortunate skip of ball in 3rd round of PGA Championship PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — As quickly as he plummeted out of co-leading the PGA Championship by starting his third round with four bogeys through seven holes, Scottie Scheffler understood things could have been worse. An errant shot out of the rain-soaked and thick rough on Oak Hill’s seventh hole had the ball headed directly for Allen’s Creek. Rather than plop in the water, the ball skipped like a stone and settled on the fairway on the other side.“That would have definitely been a kick in the gut for sure if the ball went in the hazard,” Scheffler said after finishing with a round of 3-over 73, which left him at 2-under 208 and four shots behind leader Brooks Koepka entering the final round. “Definitely fortunate to not have the ball not end up in the creek, and saved me a full shot at least.”Though he bogeyed the par-4 seventh, little did Scheffler realize at the time the hole would prove to be a turning point a day he began at 5-under and tied for the lead with Corey Conners an...
